Uplifting LGBTQ+ Newcomers: Spotlight on R.O.A.R. this Pride Month
This Pride Month, the Nanaimo Foundation is proud to uplift the vital work of R.O.A.R. (Reaching Out Assisting Refugees), a grassroots volunteer organization helping LGBTQ+ refugees find safety, dignity, and a sense of belonging here in Nanaimo.
A Local Effort with Global Impact
With the support of a grant from the Patricia Lyon Fund (held at Vancouver Foundation and distributed by Nanaimo Foundation), R.O.A.R. is delivering life-changing support: from housing and employment assistance to community care and mentorship for refugees who have fled persecution due to their gender identity or sexual orientation.
What Is R.O.A.R.?
Founded in 2016, R.O.A.R. is powered by a passionate group of LGBTQ+ individuals and allies living on Vancouver Island. These volunteers, including professionals, retirees, students, and community members, are united by a common goal: to sponsor and support LGBTQ+ refugees from across the globe.
Since their inception, they have helped resettle seven individuals from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, with more sponsorships currently in progress.
“We help people restart their lives in what will hopefully be a much safer environment — one where they don’t need to wake up every morning fearing for their safety and life.” Horst Backé, R.O.A.R. President
Building Community and Raising Awareness
R.O.A.R.’s impact extends beyond refugee sponsorship. The organization regularly hosts awareness-raising events, participates in local Pride celebrations, and collaborates nationally through the From Borders to Belonging coalition, a network committed to a world where sexual and gender-diverse people can live safely and thrive.
Powered by Local Partnerships
R.O.A.R. is deeply embedded in the Nanaimo region, with sponsorship groups operating locally and on Gabriola Island. Their work is made possible through support from generous community partners such as Rainbow Refugee, Foundation of Hope, Rotary Clubs, and Brechin United Church, among others.
