About the Opportunity

Nanaimo Community Foundation is seeking a Controller to join our team and play a
pivotal role in stewarding financial resources that advance meaningful and lasting impact
in our community.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Controller is senior leadership position responsible for
financial management, reporting, compliance, and organizational stewardship. As a
strategic thought partner to the CEO, this role contributes to organizational planning,
decision-making, and long-term sustainability, helping translate vision into strong financial
and operational practices.

This is a hands-on leadership role within a small, collaborative, and values-driven team.
While financial leadership is the primary focus, the Controller also supports HR
administration and key operational functions that enable organizational effectiveness. The
successful candidate will bring both strategic insight and practical execution—someone
who enjoys rolling up their sleeves while helping shape the Foundation’s future direction.

What You’ll Do

Financial Leadership & Reporting
• Oversee full-cycle accounting (AP, AR, general ledger, reconciliations)
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Manage budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
• Strengthen internal controls and financial policies
• Support board and committee reporting
• Lead review engagement coordination and ensure CRA compliance

Payroll & HR Administration
• Process payroll using Humi Software
• Administer employee benefits and maintain Human Resources records
• Support recruitment, onboarding, and HR processes
• Assist with policy development and employee relations

Operations & Systems
• Maintain financial and HR systems, ensuring data integrity and security
• Identify process improvements to increase efficiency

Strategic Support
• Provide financial analysis for strategic initiatives and grant applications
• Partner with leadership to support organizational decision-making
• Communicate financial insights clearly to non-financial stakeholders

What You Bring

Required Qualifications
• CPA designation (or actively working toward it)
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including senior-level responsibility
• Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
• Experience preparing materials for Boards of Directors, Finance Committees, or
Audit Committees is considered an asset
• Experience presenting financial information to non-financial audiences
• High attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Nice to Have
• Experience in the nonprofit or charitable sector
• Knowledge of fund accounting or endowment management
• Familiarity with CRA requirements for charities (e.g., T3010)
• Experience with audits and employee benefits administration

Compensation & Benefits
• Competitive salary: $85,000 – $105,000

• Standard work week (37.5 hours) with occasional flexibility required during yearend, audit cycles, board and committee meetings as well as some events.
