June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada — a time to honour the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. This month invites all Canadians to listen, learn, and reflect on the past while committing to a more equitable and inclusive future.
At Nanaimo Foundation, we are privileged to operate within the traditional territories of the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-Naw-As, and Stz’uminus First Nations. These Nations have cared for the lands and waters we all call home since time immemorial, and their knowledge, culture, and leadership continue to shape our communities today.
We also wish to recognize and uplift the work of Kw’umut Lelum Foundation — our region’s Indigenous-led community foundation. Kw’umut Lelum supports child, youth, and family well-being across nine Coast Salish First Nations, advancing self-determination through culturally grounded, community-driven solutions. Their work is a powerful example of what’s possible when philanthropy is led by Indigenous voices. We are proud to have collaborated with Kw’umut Lelum on projects such as bringing the Community Prosperity Fund to the Cowichan Valley last year.
Why National Indigenous History Month Matters
First designated by the House of Commons in 2009 as National Aboriginal History Month — and renamed in 2017 — this month is a reminder that the stories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples are foundational to the identity of this land now called Canada. It is also a time to confront the legacies of colonialism, including the tragic history of residential schools, and to understand how these impacts are still felt today.
How to Get Involved and Learn More
Throughout June, and beyond, we encourage our community to engage with Indigenous histories, perspectives, and leadership. Here are a few ways to begin or continue your learning journey:
-
Listen to Indigenous storytellers. Read books, watch films, or attend events that share Indigenous perspectives.
-
Explore reconciliation resources. Download the Reconciliation: A Starting Point app to learn more about Indigenous Peoples, key historical events, and current reconciliation efforts.
-
Learn about residential schools and the Calls to Action. Visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and read the 94 Calls to Action.
-
Understand the land you live on. Learn whose traditional territory you are on, and reflect on the significance of land acknowledgements in daily life.
-
Follow and support Indigenous-led organizations such as Kw’umut Lelum Foundation.
At Nanaimo Foundation, we are committed to building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities and supporting initiatives that foster equity, cultural resurgence, and healing. We encourage everyone to take time this month — and every month — to learn from Indigenous voices and act in meaningful ways toward reconciliation.
