NANAIMO, B.C. — Starting May 1st, Nanaimo Foundation joins communities across Canada in recognizing Legacy Month, a national initiative that invites individuals and families to consider how they can be remembered, and make a difference, through legacy giving.

Legacy giving is often misunderstood as something reserved for the wealthy or elderly. In reality, it can begin at any age and with any income level. Whether it’s a gift in a will, naming a charity as a life insurance beneficiary, or simply starting a conversation about future goals, legacy planning is about aligning your values with long-term community impact.

“Legacy giving is a powerful way to honour your values and support the causes you care about for generations to come,” said Tracey Brown, Director of Philanthropy at Nanaimo Foundation. “With thoughtful planning, anyone can leave a meaningful gift that creates lasting impact while providing valuable tax benefits for their estate.”

The foundation has launched a new campaign titled The Unexpected Face of Legacy, aimed at shifting perceptions of who can be a legacy donor. The campaign highlights a diverse range of individuals from new parents to financial advisors supporting people planning their estates with long-term impact in mind.

Recent national research supports a growing interest in charitable estate planning. A survey by Willful, an online estate planning platform, found that while only 12% of Canadians currently plan to leave a legacy gift, another 31% remain undecided, revealing a significant opportunity to increase awareness. Millennials were more than twice as likely as boomers to consider legacy giving, suggesting a shift in generational attitudes.

Throughout Legacy Month, Nanaimo Foundation will highlight inspiring local stories of planned giving through social media, provide resources for donors and professional advisors, and will host events to learn more about creating a meaningful legacy.
