Nanaimo Foundation Launches New Capacity Building Grants Program
Nanaimo Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of our new Capacity Building Grants program, designed to support the long-term sustainability, resilience, and effectiveness of charities and non-profits across our region.
Applications are now open and will be accepted until June 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM.
This new funding stream recognizes that strong organizations are essential to strong communities. While many grants focus on direct program delivery, Capacity Building Grants are intended to support the “behind-the-scenes” work that helps organizations thrive over the long term.
Eligible organizations may apply for grants ranging from $2,500 to $25,000 to support initiatives such as:
- Strategic planning;
- Governance and board development;
- Technology and software upgrades;
- Fundraising and sustainability planning;
- Staff and volunteer development;
- Evaluation and impact measurement;
- Communications and marketing capacity;
- Operational systems and infrastructure improvements.
The program was developed through direct engagement with local non-profits and charities, including sector surveys and community office hours sessions. Feedback consistently highlighted the need for more flexible funding, reduced administrative burden, and stronger investment in organizational sustainability.
The Capacity Building Grants program is guided by principles of trust-based philanthropy, including flexibility, partnership, learning, and respect for the expertise of community organizations.
Eligible applicants must be registered charities or qualified donees operating within Nanaimo–Ladysmith School District 68, including Nanaimo, Ladysmith, Cedar, Gabriola Island, and Lantzville.
Applications must be submitted through Nanaimo Foundation’s online grant portal by June 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM.
We encourage interested organizations to review the program guidelines and apply early.
